Hayfield is a beautiful village on the western flanks of Kinder Scout, part of the Pennines in the north of England. It is known as ‘The Gateway to Kinder’ and has for genertations been the main route to Kinder Scout for people from Greater Manchester. In 1932 it was the scene of ‘The Hayfield Kinder Scout Mass Trespass’, a protest against restrictions on access to the moors. Five leaders of the protest were sentenced to hard labour in prison, which resulted in extensive media coverage and outrage across the country. It has become the iconic event in the history of access to the countryside.
